Run live trainings in the terminal without losing participants.

ShellRoom turns one prepared Linux server into a complete environment for hands-on online courses. Participants connect through their browser. Trainers see who is stuck, join a participant’s terminal instantly, and keep the session moving.

ShellRoom trainer dashboard

Help stuck participants immediately

Participants can request help, and trainers can respond directly in their terminal instead of troubleshooting over screen share.

See who needs attention at a glance

Know who is online, active, idle, disconnected, or may need support without relying on Zoom alone.

Launch a full training session without the setup headache

Prepare one Linux environment, set up the session in minutes, and invite participants with a link.

Run a live terminal lab in four steps

1

Prepare one Linux server

Set up a temporary VPS or existing Linux server with the tools, datasets, and exercises for your course.

2

Add participants and trainers

Import your user table, and let ShellRoom create the training environments for each person.

3

Start the session and share the link

Participants join from their browser. Trainers get the dashboard and support tools to monitor and help.

4

Teach live while ShellRoom powers the hands-on training

Teach as usual in Zoom or other video conferencing tools while ShellRoom runs the hands-on terminal environment.

Stay focused on teaching, not on training logistics

ShellRoom combines live trainer controls with the operational details needed to run technical training smoothly.

Fast trainer controls

Quickly check participant status and jump into a terminal with minimal key presses.

Share files and live outputs

Let participants open or download files, and follow live-generated images directly in the browser.

Secure and reliable access

End-to-end encryption and a globally distributed network keep sessions protected and responsive.

Frequently asked questions

Who is ShellRoom for?
ShellRoom is a platform for the hands-on parts of technical instructor-led training, including data science and machine learning workshops, DevOps and infrastructure training, bioinformatics courses, Linux training, security labs, and engineering onboarding. It is especially useful for trainers teaching CLI-heavy workflows in online, in-person, or hybrid formats.
Do participants need to install anything?
No. Participants join in their browser and work in a web terminal.
Where does the training environment run?
On your own Linux environment, such as a temporary VPS prepared for the class. You can rent Linux instances on cloud providers such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Hetzner and use snapshots to preserve your training environment for the next time.
Do I need root access on the server?
For the full Linux-user setup, yes. That is how ShellRoom creates separate user environments. If you do not have root access, you can use the Virtual login mode where all users work within the same Linux user.
Can I try ShellRoom locally without a VPS?
Yes. The demo mode runs locally on Linux and Mac and allows you to explore the trainer and participant views like a live training environment.
What happens when a session reaches its maximum duration?
The session link expires, but terminal processes are not automatically stopped. You can restart ShellRoom to generate a new session link.
Does this replace video conferencing tools like Zoom?
No. Zoom, Google Meet, or similar tools still handle audio and video for presentation and discussion. ShellRoom handles the hands-on terminal environment alongside your existing video call.
How is this different from JupyterHub?
Similar to JupyterHub, ShellRoom provides a multi-user environment suitable for trainings. However, it is terminal-first and optimized for fast live support, trainer intervention, and minimal setup — rather than a notebook IDE. Projects like Euporie allow working with Jupyter notebooks from a terminal.
